Theorists in Child Development

Open Posted By: ahmad8858 Date: 04/05/2021 Graduate Case Study Writing

Consider the multiple theories of child development you have been studying in this module. (Refer to the lecture and chapter readings for assistance and supporting evidence.) For your initial post, identify one chosen specific theory that you feel you identify within your approach as an educator. Support your choice with statements and examples from your own experience and understanding.

For your response postings, ask questions about your peers’ choices, share additional references, and identify examples in order to build further understanding of the theorists.

Module 03 Overview and Activities

× Document Module 04 Key Theorists in Child Development

Multiple individual theorists stand out as providing instrumental theories regarding children's development, especially applicable in early childhood education best practices. From around the globe, multiple theorists expanded from their original career work and investigated the science behind how children learn, grow, and develop. These are some of the most influential theorists that particularly impact our work as early childhood educators.

Jean Piaget

Jean Piaget was born in Switzerland in 1896. He was an epistemologist (one who studies the nature of knowledge). His focus was not on what children know or when they know, but how they know. Many early childhood teachers feel that Piaget focused too much on the thought processes of children and not enough on their feelings and social interactions with their peers and teachers. Piaget encouraged an approach that was play-based and experiential, using kinesthetic learning as an effective method for young children.

Lev Vygotsky

Lev Vygotsky was born in Russia in 1896; he taught literature in secondary school. This heightened his interest in how people learn. He was especially interested in cognitive growth and language development and how they related to learning. Vygotsky introduced the concept of "scaffolding", encouraging adults to support children's development by determining the child's present level of ability and planning toward the next anticipated ability level.

Erik Erikson

Erik Erikson was an artist and a teacher, born in Germany in 1902. He met his future wife, Anna Freud, daughter of Sigmund Freud, and became interested in psychology. Anna was a psychoanalyst, and she convinced Erikson to study
